When Collingwood president Eddie McGuire concocted his now infamous coaching ‘succession plan’, did he inadvertently condemn the club’s favourite son, Nathan Buckley, to coaching mediocrity?

With grand final appearances in the two years preceding Buckley’s appointment as head coach, the club now appears to have passed its zenith and be destined for the lower reaches of the ladder.

“Is this a reflection of Buckley’s coaching? Probably not, but injuries, a changing list, questionable hunger and motivation from some of its senior players, a changing game plan and outside distractions are all contributing to Collingwood’s spluttering start.”

My latest article on The Roar examines how Buckley took over as coach from Mick Malthouse and ponders who will come out the better.
