Murky waters

The murky waters of drugs in sport has engulfed the AFL, and in particular the Essendon Football Club, in a swirling, fetid whirlpool of misinformation and half truths.

Yes, Essendon players appear to have been the victims of a poorly managed ‘supplements’ program, but the hysteria surrounding the recent public revelations by captain Jobe Watson is over the top and hardly useful in trying to make sense of the whole situation.

Investigations are in progress but the public are only privy to part of the story. While many express clear and reasoned points of view, others scream with anger and cry for blood. The investigation needs to run its course before true comment can be offered, but when the investigating parties struggle to agree on what is legitimate and what is not, you know the whole affair has degenerated into a farce.

So who is to blame?

If there must be a scapegoat then surely it has to be the medical department at the football club.

My latest article on The Roar looks into what has become a tedious affair.
